Ethel McCumber of Delaware passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, August 4, 2023 at Grady Memorial Hospital.
She was born on August 24, 1929 in Hayside, Virginia to the late Joseph and Florence (Coleman) Deel. She moved to Delaware in the 1950’s and worked for Jane M. Case Hospital and the Nippert Company prior to retiring.
Ethel was very active in her community and was always helping those in need. She was a special lady to many people and was be dearly missed by all.
Ethel was a former member of the Pleasant Hill Freewill Baptist Church and currently was attending the Eastside Mission Church. She enjoys gardening, tending to her flowers and mowing her yard. She also enjoyed crocheting and gave most of her work to family and friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her brothers, Arnold (Judy) Deel of Alabama, Thurman Deel of Okeechobee, Florida and Bill (Brenda) Deel of Delaware; sister, Lori Camp Larson of Arizona; sister-in-law, Wilma Deel of Radnor; special nephew, Bob Worrix and special nieces, Becky Zimmerman and Donna Hostetter, all of Delaware, who were always there to lend a helping hand when needed. Ethel is also survived by a very close cousin, Erma Lucas of Columbus, Ohio and many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” McCumber, her brothers Earl, Vernon, Kermit, and Ernest Deel, her sisters Juanita Deel and Irene Worrix, stepson Gary McCumber, her sisters-in-law Virgie Singleton, Lucy Ellerbe, Kathleen Viers, and Ann Deel, her daughter-in-law Frances McCumber, and her good friend Kathleen Sparks who was like a mother to her.
The family was received friends on Friday, August 11, 2023 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Drive at W. William Street, Delaware, where services celebrating’s Ethel’s life was followed at 1:00 pm with Pastor Donnie Akers officiating. Those unable to attend today's services in person, may watch the service via Facebook at www.facebook.com/DelawareSFH. Burial was be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Following the burial, a luncheon for family and friends was be held in the Snyder-Rodman Community Room.
