The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will present a fall instrumental ensembles concert on this Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The community is invited to attend this free event.

The concert will feature the MVNU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir, and Jazz Band.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will present a program of works to inspire the imagination including “The Witch and the Saint” by Steven Reinecke, “Imaginarium” by Randall Standridge, and Julie Giroux’s “One Life Beautiful.”

The program will close with an entertaining medley of music from Disney movies.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, MVNU's traditional concert band, is directed by Dr. John Packard. It performs regular fall and spring concerts on campus and offers workshops for area schools, most recently for River View High School in Warsaw and Polaris Christian Academy in Columbus.

The Jazz Band will open their portion of the concert with a medium tempo Latin chart entitled “Slow Hot Wind” by Henry Mancini.

It will feature MVNU alumnus Jonathan Winningham on the alto sax. Jazz Band guitarist Caitlin Rowe will be the featured vocal soloist in Nora Jones’ “Don’t Know Why,” written by Jesse Harris.

To end it’s performance, the Jazz Band will perform a medium swing arrangement of “Moanin’” by Bobby Timmons that will feature Christopher Hawthorne on piano and Colin Baxter on trumpet.

The Jazz Band is directed by Mr. Chuck Dettmar. It presents fall and spring concerts and performs frequently at local public schools.

The Flute Choir will also perform several works. The Flute Choir is comprised of MVNU students and community members and is directed by Mrs. Jennifer Packard. It performs at concerts on campus, and appears at the annual Central Ohio Flute Association Festival.
