The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will present a fall instrumental ensembles concert at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The community is invited to attend this free event. The concert will feature the MVNU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir, and Jazz Band, according to a university spokesperson.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by John Packard, will present a program of works to inspire the imagination. The program will include pieces such as “The Witch and the Saint” by Steven Reinecke, “Imaginarium” by Randall Standridge, and Julie Giroux’s “One Life Beautiful.” The program will conclude with a medley of music from Disney movies.
The Jazz Band, directed by Chuck Dettmar, will open their performance with “Slow Hot Wind,” a medium-tempo Latin chart by Henry Mancini. MVNU alumnus Jonathan Winningham will be featured on the alto saxophone. The Jazz Band will also showcase guitarist Caitlin Rowe as the vocal soloist in Nora Jones’ “Don’t Know Why,” written by Jesse Harris. The performance will come to a close with a medium swing arrangement of “Moanin’” by Bobby Timmons, featuring Christopher Hawthorne on piano and Colin Baxter on trumpet.
The Flute Choir, directed by Jennifer Packard, will also perform several works. The Flute Choir is comprised of MVNU students and community members.
