This week’s ATHLETES of the WEEK are Ellie Jones (soccer) and Jesse Rings (football).
Female Athlete of the Week
It's not just about the stats; it's about dedication, leadership, and the unwavering commitment to the game. This week's Female Athlete of the Week award goes to Ellie Jones, the team captain and center defender for Mount Vernon High School's girls' soccer team.
“Her hard work and dedication is unmatched,” said Bill Loginger, Mount Vernon High School’s head girls soccer coach, told the Mount Vernon News.
“She's the type of player that is not worried about stats and does everything that doesn't always show up on stats. She's a great leader on and off the field.”
Jones recently led the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets to a shutout win over the Mansfield Tygers.
“Out of nine games Ellie has played seven 80 minute games. Ellie can't be replaced in the defensive line,” Loginger said.
Male athlete of the week
Centerburg quarterback Jesse Rings, is recognized as this week's Male Athlete of the Week. His exceptional performance on the football field led the Trojans to a resounding 21-0 victory over the Cardington-Lincoln Pirates.
Rings showcased his versatility, delivering an impressive performance both through the air and on the ground. He threw for a remarkable 201 yards and rushed for an additional 131 yards, proving to be a force to be reckoned with in every aspect of the game.

The Mount Vernon News sports department is in its third year of the MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK, a school-year weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools.
To fuel it, we encourage every area high school coach to send us nominations, but if they don’t, we’ll find our own. We also encourage community members to send us their nominations.
We take all nominations seriously and will consider all that we receive. An athlete can be nominated more than once, as a worthy student-athlete can gain recognition as often as he or she earns it.
Based on their performances, we will select an ATHLETE of the WEEK and recognize other outstanding athletic accomplishments.
We will run a picture of the winner and their weekly stats or other information provided. We believe this program will help local student-athletes secure scholarships while gaining additional recognition for school athletic programs.
If we do not receive a boy and a girl in some weeks, we will spotlight only the winner from the group of nominations. These student-athletes should be commended for their accomplishments.
Help us do that and please send your nominations to kyle.barnett@mountvernonnews.com.
