Centerburg (14-2, 7-1) and Mount Vernon (13-4, 8-2) squared off in what was a matchup between two of the top teams in their respective conferences fighting for the top spot, and the Trojans rose to the occasion in a big 3-1 win over the Yellow Jackets fueled by a big night by senior outside hitter Stella Weisbrod.
“It was great to get the win last night vs Mount Vernon,” said Coach Abigail Boudinot. “ It is our second Division 1 win of the year, Olentangy being the first. We have worked very hard to compete against high level teams. We take each win or loss as a lesson and use that to make us a better team for the future."
Centerburg took the first set 25-19, but the Yellow Jackets came out ready to play in set two. It was a back-and-forth battle between the two squads, but Mount Vernon was able to squeak by with a 25-23 win. Centerburg went on to dominate sets three and four by scores of 25-16 and 25-17.
Weisbrod continued to be a force for the Trojans, with the outside hitter leading Centerburg with a game high 15 kills. She also tallied 17 digs and three aces. Seniors Clara Johnson and Kennedi Glenn split the setting duties once again, with 22 and 16 assists respectively. Glenn added six kills, one ace and 11 digs. Senior Katelyn Johnson was the top defender with 20 digs, while Julia Orndorf had 15 digs and Clara Johnson posted 13 digs. Riley Skillman had a game high four blocks.
Serving was huge for the Trojans in the win, as they had a 16-5 ace advantage in the win. Katelyn Johnson and Elena Joering each had four aces.
For Mount Vernon, Kaitlyn Thompson had seven kills, one dig. Audrey Stuller was outstanding on defense, with the sophomore tallying 30 digs. Senior Jurnie Gleason had 14 digs and fellow senior Ady Beaver had 11 digs. Emma Dean had the only two blocks of the match for Mount Vernon, as well as five kills.
With the win, Centerburg improved 7-1 in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference, and with the season winding down every game counts. They trail Fredericktown, who is 13-2 and 8-0 in conference play. Centerburg lost to Fredericktown, 3-2, on Sept. 14 and they will have a chance to face them again before the season ends, on October 10.
Mount Vernon fell to 8-2 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference, trailing undefeated Wooster who boasts a 10-0 conference record and 15-0 overall.
