Study finds Mount Vernon home to some of the nation’s slowest internet speeds

Mount Vernon is one of the small towns featured in the list of areas with slow rural internet speeds compiled in a study by SatelliteInternet.com.

With a median download speed of just 8.86Mbps, it ranks fifth among the top 10 slowest areas.

Mount Vernon challenges with internet connectivity, making it difficult for residents to engage in various online activities beyond basic tasks.

While there has been a notable increase in mean download speeds year over year for these towns.

In rural areas of the United States, internet connectivity has seen improvements, with the average download speed now reaching 111.87Mbps, and the median download speed at 45.66Mbps. However, these speeds, although notably faster compared to the previous year, still fall behind the national average.

According to the study, the national average download speed stands at 145.46Mbps, which is 30% faster than rural areas, with a median download speed of 70.99Mbps, surpassing rural areas by 50%.

Rural areas continue to experience slower internet speeds compared to their urban counterparts, highlighting the ongoing digital divide in the country.

The study methodology involved analyzing speed test results from HighSpeedInternet.com from August 2022 to July 2023 to determine internet speeds in rural areas.

Mount Vernon's placement on the list highlights the ongoing struggle with improving internet infrastructure in some small towns across the United States.
