Northmor wins XC Invite, Lehman, Schultz take home gold
Northmor won its own cross-country invitational as five local teams finished in the top six, August 21. Northmor’s Ryan Lehman won the boys competition and Loudonville’s Tess Schultz took home first on the girls side.
In team competition, Northmor won with 64 points, Pleasant was second with 83, followed by Fredericktown with 97, Centerburg with 103, East Knox with 122 and Highland with 126.
In the boys race, Lehman of Northmor came home in 17:08.08, 42.63 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Matthew Miller of Highland. Also finishing in the top 10 were David Blunk of Northmor -seventh, Alex Riegel of Centerburg – eighth, Greg Beard of Centerburg – ninth and Cael Gilmore of Highland – 10th.
Loudonville’s Schultz took home first for the girls in 20:21.09, a winning margin of 20.36 seconds over second-place finisher Payton Tucker of Centerburg. Other local girls who placed in the top 10 were Kate Lehman (Northmor) – fourth, Taylor Severt (East Knox) – fifth, Angeline Overholt (Fredericktown) – seventh, Ryann Brinkmann (Northmor) – eighth, Taylor Brown (Fredericktown), ninth and Natalie Hunter (Northmor) 10th.
Jackets soccer tops New Philadelphia 2-1
With all the scoring coming in the second half, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets (2-1, 1-1 OCC) beat the New Philadelphia Quakers (-14, 0-2 OCC) 2-1 in soccer action August 29. MV seniors Garrett Stacy and Wyatt Rhodes scored the Jackets’ tallies and sophomore goaltender Noah McCallen made four saves. MV outshot NP 22-6 and the Jackets had six corner kicks to two for the Quakers.
Lady Scots finish in fourth on the links
The second MOAC golf tournament of the season was held at Oakhaven Golf Course on August 29. The Lady Scots came in fourth with a team score of 451. They were led by Ceci Grassbaugh with a 78, which was one stroke off the school record, and good enough for second place. Sierra Fitzpatrick came in with 120, Lillia Roesky finished with 121, and Piper Dabbert and Ryleigh Dewart both shot 132.
Lady Cougars Fall at UNOH
The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women's soccer team (1-2-0) traveled to Lima, Ohio and was able to hang tough on the road, but a goal six minutes into the second half pushed University of Northwestern Ohio to a 2-1 victory on Saturday, August 26.
UNOH scored at the 11:33 mark and MVNU tied it on a goal by Maddie Critzer, assisted by Brooklyn Bryant. UNOH took the lead, 2-1 with minutes into the second half and held on to win.
UNOH outshot the Lady Cougars 20-7 and had nine shots on goal compared to five for MVNU
Hannah Miller had five saves in goal for MVNU and Addison Crace led the offense with three shots taken, one shot on goal.
