The Knox County Garden Clubs presented a flower show entitled “The Art of Georgia O’Keeffe” during the August Mount Vernon Music and Arts Festival at the Living Center. Exhibitors from the Knox County Garden Clubs and the world competed in horticulture and artistic class.
An Educational Exhibit by Mary Scott and the Fredericktown Garden Club was staged at the entrance of the show and told the visitor a little about Georgia O’Keeffe and her artwork.
It featured some of O'Keeffe's artwork, several books of her work and postcards.
The event was filled with live flowers and plants, including designs from Flowers for You. The Flower Basket displayed a large piece of wood with grasses, succulents, and calla lilies and the Source of Life Organics exhibit featured succulents in unusual planters.
The horticulture schedule included classes for zinnias, sunflowers, dahlias, marigolds, marigold sprays, annual round blooms, gladiolus, annual sprays and spikes, grasses, container grown plants, shrubs, vegetables or fruits and a market basket.
Best of Show was awarded to Melanie Earnest of Fredericktown, for a large white hydrangea.
A section for juniors under the age of 19 featured one annual bloom round, annual spray, annual spike, container-grown plants and a constructed creature using fresh vegetables, fruits, or plant material.
Best of Show was awarded to Piper Schirtzinger for an annual one-bloom.
Residents of the Living Center entered container-grown plants and glass plates decorated with pressed plant materials.
Best of Show for a container-grown plant was awarded to Jane Sweeney and Best of Show plate to Barbara Hall.
The Section D of the Artistic category, which is open to any adult amateur arranger, professional arranger, student judge, judge, or Judge Emeritus was awarded to Audrey Spearman, Apple Valley Garden Club for her design entitled “Dead Pinon Tree” a design featuring treasured wood.
In Section E of Artistic, open to any adult amateur designer Best of Show was awarded to Audrey Spearman, Apple Valley Garden Club, for her design entitled “Calla Lily” featuring one sunflower.
A special award for Most Creative was awarded to Julies Divelbiss, North Liberty Garden Club for “New Mexico."
"I design interrupting the state of New Mexico featuring glads in a transparency design," said Divelbiss.
A special award for Judges Choice was awarded to Robin Rapp, Apple Valley Garden Club, featuring apples in a mass design entitled “Apple Family."
Peoples Choice Award, voted on by visitors to the show, was awarded to Mattie Butler, Mount Vernon. Her design entitled “Mountains and Lakes” featured a large wood stump with flowers found around her farm and pond.
Plants for the Best of Show winners were provided by Country Colors Greenhouse, Lowes, and Richardson’s Greenhouse.
Gift certificates in a drawing of participating exhibitors were given by Forster’s Seeds of Quality.
