MOUNT VERNON – On Friday, July 14, 2023, Corey Nathaniel Suydam, loving son, brother, and uncle, passed away at age 41.

Corey was born on April 14, 1982, to Michael Levine and Mary Suydam in Mount Vernon. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy’s delayed entry program during his senior year of high school, and after graduation served 6 years in the U.S. Navy. He was deployed on the USS Enterprise during the second Persian Gulf War. After his honorable discharge, he obtained his police training certification at Hocking College and also joined the U.S. Air Guard Reserves. He served in the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield. In 2011, he transferred to the 117th Air Refueling Wing in Birmingham, Ala., when he was hired as a police officer for the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Corey thrived in this career for over a decade, and was promoted to field training officer. In July 2021, Corey retired from the U.S. Air Guard after successfully completing a 20-year career in active and reservist duty. He received a life-saving kidney transplant in April 2022.

Corey was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Maurice Suydam and Irene Breitengross, and paternal grandparents, Harry and Naomi Levine. He is survived by his parents, Mary Suydam and Michael Levine, his brother Seth Levine, his sister Zeva (Jagadish) Manvi, and his niece Naomi Manvi.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 25, at 10 a.m. at the Santa Barbara Cemetery in California. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions to Donate Life (donatelife.net) and the PKD Foundation (pkdcure.org).
