Knox County Pomona Grange was hosted by Middlebury Grange in May

Knox County Pomona Grange met May 15 at Wayne Grange Hall. Middlebury Grange was the host with Master Lonnie Totten opening the meeting 7 p.m.

Margaret Ann Ruhl reported for Sue Roy on the Legislative update. She noted they just completed a special election May 2, and in Knox County, all the voting was done at the board of elections headquarters. It saved money on renting precincts places and the number of workers. There will be a special election Aug. 8 for one issue. It is believed all the precincts will be open for that vote.

Mary Jewell, family activities chairperson, reported all crafts and photos are to be judged at the home granges. The winners will be judged at the August meeting, and those winners will go on to the Ohio State Grange in October.

Deputy Cindy Campbell reported on the Ohio State Grange dartball tournament. It was held April 1 at the Old Fredericktown High School. Knox County Granges hosted the food sales. There was a good profit, but no decision was made on what to spend the funds on, with the exception of using it to send juniors to the Ohio State Grange junior camp.

The Farm-City dinner was held April 17 at the Ramser 4-H Center. There were 52 people in attendance and for the first time, all visitors received a door prize. The meal was catered by Lannings Foods. The leftover food was taken to the Mount Vernon Fire Department. 

Campbell attended the spring fling hosted by the Ohio State Grange family activities chairpersons. They made 4-foot-long welcome signs. There were five members from Knox County who attended this function. 

Campbell also attended the deputies conference May 6. There were 55 members across the state present. Campbell reported the Ohio State Grange office phones are working with a new number. The Ohio Grange Magazine is being published in house due to the closing of the previous printing company. Cost may go up to have them mailed as they currently pay $5 per year for postage. 

National Grange has made a change in the Sixth Degree. More information on this is expected at a later time.

The Ohio State Grange office is looking at updating their email notification. To get emails from the Ohio State Grange, let them know your email to continue receiving notices. All granges are to vote on their delegates to the Ohio State Grange. There are currently 2,326 grange members and 113 junior grange members with 100 granges in Ohio. 

A reminder that all quarterly reports due to the Ohio State Grange are to be mailed with a check for the dues. Also, the Ohio State Grange talent contest is June 17 at the Ohio State Grange office.

Results of the Ohio State Grange baking contest had 20 entries in the Everything Cookie category; Men's Cool Whip Cookies had 20 entries; the Buckeye Brownies had 24 entries; and Juniors had 13 entries in the Sprinkle Drop Cookie with Clara Miller winning from Wayne Grange. 

Lastly, Campbell reminded everyone to start working on Knox County Fair booths.

Donations were voted on to give to the Fredericktown Tomato Show sponsorship for the flowers and to sponsor several trophies for the 4-H Clubs. The dictionary project was voted to continue for the third graders at Pleasant Street Elementary School. David Daniels wanted the opinions to change the trophies for the county dartball to a rotating plaque. All were in favor of this idea.

Dee Smith reported the Pop Committee will be meeting soon. Pop worker schedules will be similar to last year. Lecturer Willis Smith presented a program on hope and the second on planting. Cathy Morey read information about the hoe; Priscilla Arnholt read on the pruning knife; and Ned Campbell read about the history of the hoe. Pictures of the old time hoes were shared.

Cards are to be sent to Sue Roy after her mother's death. The next meeting will be 7 p.m. June 19 at Harrison Grange.
