As summer approaches and grilling weather reaches full swing, a recent study by BetOhio indicates that hot dogs are Ohio residents’ favorite choice at barbecues.

According to a press release, BetOhio analyzed data from Google Trends from the past five years to calculate numbers and determine the most searched main meal for cookouts. The company compared searches by volume and found that the five most popular cookout foods nationwide are chicken wings, hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs and grilled chicken. The company then averaged out results to get the top cookout foods for each state, and the data shows that hot dogs are the preferred meat at Ohio barbecues.

“Hot dogs are an American classic,” the release stated. “They are cheap, easy to cook and satisfy a large crowd during BBQ sessions. It also does not hurt that a variety of condiments can be served with it. Although it is not America’s favorite meat for cookouts, it almost feels like families are obligated to have hot dogs cooking on the grill, and the Buckeye State can certainly agree.”

According to the analysis, ribs are the most popular barbecue protein coming in at No. 1 in 19 states, followed by hot dogs, which tied for second place with hamburgers. Each came in first in 10 states, and chicken wings were No. 1 with six states, while grilled chicken was last on the top five at five states.
