MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Genealogy Society will host a special speaker Monday, May 15, at the COTC building downtown at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend – no fee involved. The speaker is Deborah Kitko. She has been interested in genealogy since 1988 and is currently employed as the full-time genealogy librarian with the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster, Ohio, since 1998.
Kitko grew up in Akron, received a bachelor's degree in business administration/marketing from the University of Akron, and received her master’s degree in library science from Kent State University. She is a certified public librarian through the Ohio Library Council and received a Professional Learning Certificate in genealogical studies through the National Institute of Genealogical Studies in 2004. She is currently president of the Wayne County Genealogical Society, a trustee for the Wayne County Historical Society and a trustee with the Ohio Genealogical Society covering the district that includes Knox County.
The society is also sponsoring a genealogy seminar called "Genealogy Begins At Home," on Saturday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Knox County Historical Society building at 875 Harcourt Rd. This is also for the public to join us if you’re interested in tracing your family ancestors. The seminar is geared for the beginner in getting started as well as helpful information for the experienced researcher. The seminar is free, also. There will be a question/answer time at the end of the presentation.
We hope you will consider joining our local society if you have an interest in your family tree. We meet on the third Monday evenings of May, August and November at the COTC building downtown at 7 p.m. A local library full of local research helps, and we have a First Families of Knox County Society, if you can prove your ancestor lived in Knox County by Dec. 31, 1830. We are also willing to help you along with your family research. Our library is open by appointment only – just call Jim at 740-324-0183, Suzy at 740-504-9117 or Ernie at 740-625-5926.
