BLADENSBURG – The Bladensburg Community Center, in conjunction with Knox County Special Olympics, is hosting a free Special Olympics event on Thursday, March 23, starting at 6 p.m.
Every year, Special Olympics of Ohio hosts the Winter State Championships. Special Olympic athletes practice all year for these state championships, but this year, they found out many of them weren’t invited to participate. This was a huge disappointment to our local athletes and thus the community rallied and decided to organize and support a special competition for all 20 Knox County Special Olympics athletes.
Through donations from the community and Bladensburg SERTOMA, and with the support and encouragement of the community, Bladensburg will be the host location for our own Knox County Special Olympics. They will compete in shooting, dribbling and pass/catch, just like they practice all year for. The goal is to provide countywide Special Olympic athletes the chance to have their final tournaments, thus fulfilling their basketball journey and dreams.
Trophies will be handed out after the competition.
“The participants are the Special Olympic athletes, but in the end, we are going to have a few fun basketball challenges that the audience can join in to play,” local organizer Angie Muston said.
The Bladensburg Community Center is located at 25821 New Guilford Rd., Bladensburg, Ohio. This is a free event and is open to everyone who would like to come out and support our own Special Olympians. Volunteers are also needed.
Pizza and light refreshments will be served following the event.
