Danville 43, Mount Gilead 34

Danville (5-7, 3-5) had three players in double figures led by Ella Proper’s 16 points, to fuel an upset comeback 43-34 win over Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC)-leading Mount Gilead (11-2, 6-1) on Jan. 11, handing the Indians their first KMAC loss of the season.

Mount Gilead (MG) led 14-5 in the first quarter, with the Indians' Aubrey Thomas putting up five points to lead the way. Madilyn Elson scored four points and Lydia Stalnaker hit a three for MG.

Danville outscored Mount Gilead 11-8 in the second quarter to make it a 22-16 game in favor of the Indians at halftime. Proper and Jaylyn Smith each drained a three for Danville. Addison Mickley led the Blue Devils with six points at halftime.

Danville came out on a mission in the third quarter, outscoring Mount Gilead 16-8. Proper went off from deep with three makes from downtown. Jaylyn Workman put up four points for the Blue Devils. Ava Baker hit a three for Mount Gilead.

The Blue Devils were able to finish out the game strong with an 11-4 advantage to close out a solid nine-point win over a tough Mount Gilead squad.

Proper led all scorers with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. She also had three rebounds and an assist. Workman and Mickley each scored 10 points for the Blue Devils. They also each had six boards, an assist and a steal. Kylie Hess finished with two points, four steals, four assists and four boards.

Danville's defense held the Mount Gilead squad to single-digit scoring numbers. Elson and Candace Millisor each scored seven points to lead the Mount Gilead Indians. Thomas added six points and Faith White had five points.

Northmor 48, Centerburg 43

Lauren Johnson and Madison Simpson combined for 31 points to lead Northmor (7-4, 5-2) to a 48-43 victory over KMAC rival Centerburg (5-9, 1-6) on Jan. 11.

The game was locked at 4-4 in the first quarter, before Emily Zeger jumped in front of a pass for a steal for Northmor. Centerburg was up 10-9 after one quarter, led by Clara Johnson, who scored six points. Simpson scored three points in the first quarter for Northmor.

It remained tight in the second quarter, with Northmor outscoring Centerburg 11-10 to make it a 20-20 tie at halftime. Lauren Johnson had a steal and fast break score to tie the game at 17-17, and then she tied up the game at 20-20 with a 3-pointer as time was winding down.

In the third quarter, Simpson nailed a three from atop the key to put Northmor up 27-20. Moments later, Zeger stole a pass and promptly scored on a layup to go up 29-25. Both teams scored 11 points in the quarter, making it a 31-31 game going into the fourth quarter. Kayla Larimore scored six points and Clara Johnson put up five points for Centerburg. Simpson scored five and Lauren Johnson scored four points for the Golden Knights.

Northmor made it a 38-34 game in the fourth on a 3-pointer by Zeger. Down the stretch, Lauren Johnson, Zeger and Simpson also showed off the defense with timely steals. Northmor outscored Centerburg 17-12 in the fourth to take the five-point win.

Lauren Johnson led all Northmor scorers with 17 points, including a three and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. Simpson scored 14 points with a three and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Zeger added seven points in the win.

Clara Johnson put up 18 points including a pair of threes for Centerburg. Larimore scored 14 points and Evie Stowe scored nine points, all on threes.

Newark Catholic 52, Utica 37

Utica (4-7, 1-5) traveled to Newark Catholic (11-2, 7-1) in hopes of continuing their hot streak, but the Green Wave was just too much for the Redskins in a 52-37 loss to snap a three-game winning streak for the Redskins. 

The Green Wave went on a 10-0 run to open the night, but Riley Thompson drained a three to make it a 10-3 game. Newark Catholic then went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter with an 18-3 advantage.

In the second quarter, Bella Coulter hit a three to stop a 10-0 run by the Green Wave, making it a 20-6 game. She hit another three to make it a 22-9 game. The Green Wave led 27-10 when Abby Paxton cut the lead to 14 with a 3-pointer. While Utica’s offense woke up a bit in the second quarter with 12 points, Newark Catholic piled on 19 more to make it a 37-15 game at halftime. Coulter showed her defensive skills with a pair of steals in the second quarter.

Utica had a 12-7 advantage in the third quarter to make it a 44-27 game. Skylar Parker had a pair of steals in the quarter. Utica then outscored the Green Wave 10-8 to end the game, highlighted by a three for Thompson and a fast break layup by Carlie Hill. While the team turned things around in the second half, it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback, with Utica taking a 15-point loss.

Cardington-Lincoln 38, Fredericktown 29

Cardington-Lincoln (8-5, 6-1) moved up to second place in the KMAC standings as they squeaked by with a 38-29 win over Fredericktown (5-9, 1-6) on Jan. 11. 

The Lady Pirates started off the game on a 4-0 run and with Fredericktown threatening to score, Samantha Miller stepped in front of a pass for a steal. Later in the second quarter, Cardington-Lincoln (C-L) was up 13-8 and Lydia Hess came away with a steal of her own. With the score 20-12 in favor of Cardington-Lincoln, Genevieve Longsdorf also recorded a steal, and at 21-12, Madison Caulkins stole a pass for C-L.

In the third quarter, the Pirates' defensive tenacity continued with Hess recording a steal with 6:40 on the clock and Cardington-Lincoln up 21-14.

The Pirates out shot the Freddies 35% to 21% but failed to hit a three. Fredericktown sank 19% of their shots from downtown. Cardington-Lincoln led in rebounds 34-29, assists 11-3 and steals 12-11. The Freddies had the game’s only two blocks and led in free-throw percentage, 58% to 46%.
