MOUNT VERNON – Shirley (Tier) Vannatta, 87, of Mount Vernon, earned her angel wings on Dec. 8, 2022, with her family by her side. She was born on April 10, 1935, to Harry R. and Ruth G. (Lepley) Tier. Growing up in Mount Vernon, Shirley became a majorette and Forum Queen before graduating from Mount Vernon High School in 1953. She married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Marvin Vannatta, on June 2, 1957.

Shirley was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive mother and grandmother. She was her family’s biggest cheerleader and could always be found on the sidelines, in the stands, or wherever her family wanted their Mom/Gommy/Mama to be. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Athens Elks Emblem Club, Gay Street United Methodist Church, and a lifelong member of Ohio Eastern Star. Her family and friends will remember her for her love of country music, a good card game, The Ohio State Buckeyes, crocheting, gingersnaps, and for the many memories made on the lake.

Shirley will reunite with her loved ones in heaven including her husband, Marvin Vannatta; parents Harry and Ruth Tier; and brother William Tier.

Her memory lives on through her daughters Sherilyn (Thomas) Fitz, Shelly Fitzpatrick, Malinda Moore; grandchildren Stephanie (Joshua) Headings, Tiffany (Joshua) Miller, Alyssa Moore, Jacob Moore, Shae Fitzpatrick, JuliAnn Moore; and great-granddaughters Riley, Blakely, and Cali Miller.

The family will be observing a private burial of ashes. Memorial contributions can be made to Capitol City Hospice or your favorite charity in Shirley’s memory.
