Utica 42, Fredericktown 35
Fredericktown and Utica were both ice cold in the first half, and both teams got their scoring machines together in the second half, as the Redskins (1-0) got their first win of the season by downing the Freddies (1-1), 42-35, Nov. 22.
The Lady Freddies were ahead 5-4 after one. Cally Carpenter scored three and Ella Bouton hit a field goal for Fredericktown, and Abby Dickson scored all four points for Utica.
Fredericktown took an 8-6 second quarter to go up 13-10 in the low-scoring first half. Ella Bouton hit four in the quarter for the Freddies, and Utica divided up the points among three players.
Both teams heated up in the third, with Utica putting up 15 to Fredericktown’s 12, to tie the game at 25-25 entering the fourth. Isabella Coulter his three treys for the Redskins, and Carpenter and Jill Bouton each put five in the book for Fredericktown.
The final quarter saw Utica light up the board with 17 points. Fredericktown hit for 10 and fell by seven in the game. Utica’s Delaney Kerstetter sank three from 2-point range, and Skylar Parker hit a deuce and five free throws in the frame while Fredericktown’s Jill Bouton hit the twine for six points.
Fredericktown coach Tim Maceyko attributed the uneven showing to the team’s “growing pains.”
He said, “We were only 1-for-14 from 3-point range and made 23 turnovers. We haven’t found ourselves yet, but the potential is there.”
Utica was led in the scorebook by Dickson and Kerstetter with 11 each, and Parker and Coulter each scored nine. Fredericktown has three players in double figures – Jill Bouton with 11 and Carpenter and Audrey Bouton with 10 points each.
Danville 38, Johnstown-Monroe 29
The Danville Lady Blue Devils (1-0) rebounded from an ice-cold first quarter to down Johnstown-Monroe (1-1), 38-29, Nov. 22.
Neither team could find the twine often in a 4-4 opening frame. Grace Groneberg and Broegan Staats each scored a pair for Danville.
In the second, the Lady Blue Devils got on track and outscored the Johnnies 13-8 for a 17-13 halftime edge. Kylee Hess hit a trey, and Jaylyn Workman and Ella Proper swished in a deuce for Danville.
J-M got close in the third with an 11-8 quarter to bring the score to 25-24. Danville kept the lead thanks to a three by Workman.
The Lady Blue Devils went to work in the fourth, outpointing J-M 13-6 for the seven-point win. Workman hit five and Jaylyn Smith got four in the frame.
Workman was the only Lady Blue Devil in double figures; she hit for 12, and Alexis Dehl scored 16 for J-M.
Loudonville 39, Cardington-Lincoln 38
Loudonville (1-1) squeaked by Cardington-Lincoln (1-2) in a 39-38 thriller Nov. 22, as Jenna Guilliams hit five threes and sank 17 points for the Lady Redbirds, and Sophia Spangler made seven free throws for Loudonville.
C-L took a 10-8 first-quarter lead on scoring from four players, paced by Lydia Hess’ four points on a three and a free throw.
The second quarter was an even 12-12, to send the Lady Pirates into halftime with a 22-20 advantage. Kinstin Henthorn drained two from beyond the arc in the quarter for C-L.
The third quarter was a defensive battle, with Loudonville cutting the lead to one at 27-26. The Redbirds outscored the Pirates 6-5 in the frame, with Hess nailing one from downtown and Genevieve Longsdorf making two from the charity stripe.
In the fourth, despite eight points on two 3-pointers and two free throws by Madison Linkous, the Lady Pirates were outpointed 13-11 for a last-minute one-point win by the Redbirds.
The Lady Pirates were led by Hess with 12 and Linkous with eight, as eight C-L players put points in the scorebook.
Centerburg 65, Elgin 29
Centerburg’s Lady Trojans (1-1) got their first win of the year, dominating Elgin (0-2) in the second half to take a 65-29 win Nov. 22.
In the first quarter, C-burg’s Kenlee Fairall hit her first of four 3-pointers in the game and set the tone with nine points. Avery Glenn hit a pair of threes, and Clara Johnson drained a deuce and a trey, as Centerburg jumped out to a 26-10 lead.
In the second, the Lady Trojans were outscored 12-11 but took a 37-22 lead into the locker room. Kayla Larimore hit for five to give her nine first-half points.
Centerburg came out with purpose in the third and outpointed Elgin 14-7 to assume a 51-29 lead. Fairall hit three treys in the third, and Glenn rainbowed one.
In the fourth, Centerburg pitched a shutout and outscored Elgin 14-0 for the 36-point victory as six Lady Trojans divided up the points.
Fairall finished with 20 points, Larimore hit for 15, Johnson and Glenn each scored nine, and seven Lady Trojans put points on the board in the game.
Granville 49, Highland 16
A swarming Granville Christian defense and an ice-cold first half spelled defeat for the Highland Lady Scots (0-3), as the Blue Aces won their season opener, 49-16.
Granville scored 18 unanswered points in the first quarter and put up another 18 in the second to one for Highland, to take a 36-1 halftime lead.
Highland showed grit and a no-quit resolve and won the second half, albeit largely against Granville reserves, but the Lady Scots did tie Granville 9-9 in the third and outscored then 6-4 with a running clock fourth.
Senior Shelby Conley led Highland with four points. Senior Abby Jordan, sophomore Aubree Bellamy and sophomore Bryleigh Young each added three points. Rounding out the scoring were senior Guinevere Jackson with two points and senior Makayla Woods with one point.
