No chain restaurants in Mount Vernon

To the Editor:

We moved to Apple Valley nearly two years ago.

Can someone please give me some information on why there is only one chain restaurant in the entire city and surrounding areas? What's worse is that Ruby Tuesday's, the only chain restaurant that is here, is unclean, and the food is mediocre at best. It should be examined and shut down by the health department.

I'm not talking about chain fast food restaurants, or the small locally owned operations that are speckled throughout the area or the dives, but honest-to-goodness large chain restaurants!

If we want to go to a Darden restaurant, a Roadhouse, Roosters, Chili's, Red Robin, BJ's or an Applebee's, we need to travel an hour to any of five or six small towns/cities to eat some great food. Why? Who is in charge of bringing some really good food choices to this city and its surrounding areas? Why do these cities have the options and we don't?

Can someone give me an answer or tell me why this city is being held back from the opportunity to grow and enjoy what other cities do?

Please let me know.
