To the Editor:
All Ohioans benefit from a strong economy. Business owners are entitled to make a profit for their investment of time and money, and employees are entitled to receive a living wage. But who benefits when corporate profits are up nearly 13%? Not the middle class.
Some mega-corporations like Amazon, ExxonMobil and others are posting exorbitant profits, cynically benefiting from the complicated economic consequences of COVID worldwide and heating profit-price inflation. Yet, if companies valued the long-term health of the economy rather than short-term gains, the economy would cool without costing jobs or lowering wages.
Congress can provide incentives to slow inflation by enforcing existing antitrust laws, for example, that would encourage the kind of competition that reflects our free market principles while passing windfall profit taxes and enacting legislation to stop price-gouging. (This is not socialism. It is sound economic policy.) It is a myth that the country’s economy fares better under Republican control. Instead, we need more Democrats in Congress – in both the House and Senate.
Your vote is vital in November. Vote for reasonable Democrats who have the nation’s best interests at heart, not those of ExxonMobile. Smart candidates like Tim Ryan, Joyce Beatty, Tamie Wilson, Gary Josephson and Amy Ripple-Elton can safeguard living wages, fair profits, and a strong economy for everyone.
Sincerely,
