Men hold on despite red card

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team (7-3-4, 2-1-3 CL) defeated the University of Saint Francis (7-6-2, 0-5-1 CL) by a score of 4-2 on Saturday night, October 15 in Fort Wayne.

The Cougars got the scoring started in the 8th minute as Tiago DeJesus scored to give MVNU the lead. Then, just 11 minutes later, Keon Boney doubled the visitors’ lead. With a 2-0 lead going into halftime, things looked to be really going MVNU’s way. However, a red card early in the second half meant the Cougars would be playing a man down for the remainder of the match. Despite this, Aaron Jolly scored in the 70th minute to make the score 3-0 for Mount Vernon. Saint Francis fought back with two goals in the 75th and 77th minutes, but Joshua Sitney scored in the 82nd minute to clinch the road win for MVNU.

Despite the loss, the hosts outshot MVNU 11-9 on the night. Joshua Dunn made five saves in goal for MVNU.

The Cougars are back in action at CH4 Stadium in Mount Vernon next Saturday, Oct. 22, as they play host to Spring Arbor University in a Crossroads League showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
