MOUNT VERNON – A scoreless battle ended with two goals in the final 12 minutes, one by each team, as the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team (5-3-4, 0-1-3 CL) tied No. 24 Indiana Wesleyan University (8-2-3, 2-1-1 CL) 1-1 at CH4 Stadium on Oct. 8.
MVNU's Keon Boney scored the game-tying goal with four minuters of play remaining.
The first half saw both teams playing aggressively and physically, but there were no clear-cut scoring chances for either side. Things opened up quite a bit in the second half as the shots began to come in more frequently. The Cougars outshot the Wildcats 16-13, with MVNU putting six shots on goal compared to IWU’s five.
In the 78th minute, Jaxon Carpenter put the visitors up with a rocket of a goal from outside the box that beat MVNU goalkeeper Joshua Dunn. IWU played with energy, and as though they had won the game, but in the 86th minute, MVNU's Boney chased down a bouncing ball in the box, took a touch behind the defender, and shot it past the onrushing goalkeeper to equalize for the Cougars. The game ended in 1-1 tie.
The Cougars are back in Crossroads League action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, as they host Marian University at CH4 Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
