MOUNT VERNON – Joshuah Sitney took full advantage of a penalty kick in the final minute, sending the ball into the net to secure a 2-2 tie for the Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s soccer team (5-2-2, 0-0-1 CL) against Taylor University (2-4-4, 0-0-1 CL) on Saturday at CH4 Stadium in its Crossroads League opener.
MVNU trailed early after Sawyer Watterson put Taylor on the board 4 minutes into the game. The Cougars kept battling and were given an opportunity to get on the board after a foul in the box. Sitney took the penalty kick and converted in the 30th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Taylor took the lead just 2 minutes later on a goal from Cam Broadfoot. The Trojans led 2-1 at the half. The score remained the same throughout the second half until some late-game drama arose. With the physicality picking up, MVNU was awarded another penalty kick with 58 seconds remaining in the game. Sitney took the PK once again and sent it to the top right corner of the net, forcing things to end in a 2-2 draw.
MVNU dominated the shot battle, ending with a 22-9 advantage. Nine of MVNU’s shots were on goal.
MVNU travels to Goshen, Ind., for a contest with Goshen College on Sept. 28. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
