MOUNT VERNON – Donald E. Crunkilton, 95, of Mount Vernon passed away on Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, at the Country Club Rehabilitation Campus in Mount Vernon surrounded by his family. He was born on June 26, 1927, in Pike Township, Knox County, to the late Percy and Effie (Gower) Crunkilton.
Donald honorably served his country during WWII in the Merchant Marines. He was a faithful member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and volunteered at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic School. He was the oldest member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 847 and a member of the Father John Baptist Lamy Assembly #2970 Danville / Mount Vernon. Don was a lifelong farmer and had worked at Cooper Bessemer in Mount Vernon. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Donald is survived by his children, Stephen (Verle) Crunkilton of Butler, John (Rhonda) Crunkilton of Butler, Daniel (Susan) Crunkilton of Henderson, NV, Joseph (Michele) Crunkilton of Butler, Patricia Ann (Jack) Carpenter of Mount Vernon, Nancy Weiss of Mount Vernon, Rosemary Helmick of Fredericktown, Debra (Chuck) Duncan of Fredericktown and Kathy (Kip) Cole of Butler; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Helen M. (Kochis) Crunkilton in 2015; a son, Paul Crunkilton in 1971; sisters, Dorothy Stone, Vera Richert and Alice Pittenger; and brothers, Dale, Sterl, Virgil and Percy Crunkilton.
The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Flowers Chapel, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon. The Rosary will be recited and a Chalice presentation following the visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as the Celebrant. Don will be laid to rest beside his wife, Helen in Mount Calvary Cemetery with Military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
