Highland 3, Galion 0
In a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in MOAC play, the Highland Fighting Scots played three tough sets in sweeping the Galion Tigers by scores of 25-21, 27-25, 26-24.
Highland (9-0, 5-0) jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set over the Tigers (4-2, 3-1). Galion retook the lead at 14-13, and the two teams saw the set tied six times before the Scots pulled away to win, 25-21.
The second set once again had the Scots with the early lead and would go ahead 15-10. That was the largest lead by either team all night. The Tigers came roaring back and had set point at 24-23 and 25-24, but the Scots took the set with three straight kills by Kameron Stover, Mia Stanco and Larsen Terrill.
The third set was a repeat with the Scots leading at 10-5 and the Tigers chipping away at the lead and finally taking the lead at 21-20. Galion would once again have set point at 24-23, but two kills by Stover sandwiched around a Tiger hitting error gave the set and the match to the Scots.
Lady Scot stat leaders for the match included Terrill with 28 assists, 10 kills and 17 digs. Stover finished with 18 kills and 17 digs; Zoya Winkelfoos recorded eight kills and 17 digs; Brooke Schott and Stanco each had seven kills; and Camryn Miller had 17 digs. The match represented strong back-to-back performances by Terrill and Stover, who each dominated Shelby in a straight-set win a day earlier. Against Shelby, Stover scored 15 kills and three aces, and Terrill had 30 assists and six kills. Winkelfoos recorded eight kills against Shelby.
In a program sweep Wednesday night. the freshmen (7-1) won 25-8, 25-10 and the JV team (7-2) won 25-19, 25-19.
The Scots are off until next Tuesday, when they travel to River Valley.
New Philadelphia 3, Mount Vernon 2
The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets lost the first set to New Philadelphia by a tight 26-24 count, then reeled off two straight set victories to take a 2-1 lead, but the Quakers took the show from there, winning the final two sets for a 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-9 triumph in five sets.
The Lady Jackets were led by Peyja McCord and Emma Dean with 11 kills each and Kaitlyn Thompson with 10 and Jurnie Gleason with nine. Dean also had four blocks, and Madi Rohler was a monster in the middle with 32 digs, followed by Tori Burdette with 18. Burdette also had 42 assists in the match.
The Jackets fell to 2-3 on the year and in OCC play, and the Quakers improved to 5-2 (4-1 in OCC).
Centerburg 3, Northridge 0
Centerburg improved its season record to 6-0 with a 25-14, 25-10, 25-16 win over Northridge on Wednesday. The Vikings dropped to 3-7.
Winning handily in all three sets, the Lady Trojans were led by Stella Weisbrod with 14 kills, Gwyn Sands with 10 kills and Kennedi Glenn with 13 digs.
Utica 3, Lakewood 1
Utica improved to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in Licking Conference play with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Lakewood on Tuesday. After dropping the first set 25-18, the Indians took a close second set 25-22 and controlled late in the next two sets to finish the match off with 25-18 and 25-17 set wins.
Utica was paced by Emilee Ellis with three kills, six aces, 13 assists and six digs; Emma Kimpel with six kills and eight digs; Carlie Parsons with five kills, two aces and eight digs; Abby Buchanan with five kills and two blocks; and Ellie Boggs with seven kills.
