Highland stays undefeated, hands Loudonville first loss
Highland’s Lady Scots met the Loudonville Lady Redbirds in a battle of unbeaten volleyball teams, and Highland left with a 7-0 record and Loudonville dropped to 5-1 after a straight-set victory Sept. 3 on Highland’s home court, 25-13, 25-15, 25-9.
Making it a super sweep, Highland’s freshmen (5-1) beat Loudonville 25-16 and 25-12, while the JV team (6-1) won 25-21 and 25-20.
In the varsity match, Highland and Loudonville battled throughout the first set and were tied at 20-20 when the Scots pulled away after three hitting errors by the Redbirds, a kill by Kameron Stover and a finishing block by Anya Taylor and Larsen Terrill.
In set two, the schools followed the same script. The two teams were tied throughout much of the set, before the Scots pulled away at the end with four different Scots recording kills to clinch the set.
Set three however, was much different. The Redbirds jumped out to a 6-0 lead, forcing a Scots timeout. The lead grew to 9-2 before the Scots made a mini-run to get to within five at 12-7. The Redbirds expanded their lead to 16-9, forcing another Scots timeout, but still the lead stretched to 18-10. Then the Scots caught fire. Loudonville tried to slow the Scots with timeouts at 18-13 and the score even at 18-18, but it wouldn't be enough. Four kills by three different Scots, combined with a Redbird hitting error in the last five points, gave the Scots the 3-0 victory.
On the stat sheet, Highland was led by Kameron Stover with 18 kills and three aces, Larsen Terrill with 28 assists and two aces and Zoya Winkelfoos with nine kills. Brooke Schott had eight kills, and Camryn Miller served three aces.
Fredericktown takes 3-1 win over Licking Valley
Fredericktown improved to 7-2 with a four-set win over Licking Valley on Sept. 1. The Freddies beat the Panthers by set scores of 25-19, 19-25, 25-13 and 25-12.
Recording 33 kills to 31 for the Panthers, the Freddies were led by Jillian Bouton with 12. Cally Carpenter served three of Fredericktown’s 10 aces and Bouton finished with all three of her team’s blocks. Coming up with 77 digs, the Freddies were led by Bella Mullins with 20, Taylor Bryant with 18 and Grace Sipes with 15.
West Holmes wins in four sets over Mount Vernon
In a match that saw one set go to the wire and a marathon set go 62 games, West Holmes prevailed over Mount Vernon, 3-1. West Holmes took a 2-0 lead after taking the first set 25-19 and eking out a tight second set, 25-23. In set three, a back-and-forth contest ended with the Lady Jackets outlasting the Knights, 32-30. West Holmes regrouped and took the final set 25-13. The loss dropped Mount Vernon to 2-2 on the season as West Holmes improved to 2-6.
The Jackets were led by Peyja McCord with 12 kills, Emma Dean with 11 kills, Jenna Riley with eight kills and three aces, Madi Rohler with 21 digs and Toni Burdette with 31 assists.
East Knox records first win, 3-0 over Utica
East Knox got its first win of the season and improved to 1-3 with a 3-0 victory over Utica (2-6) Sept. 3. The set scores were all EK, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23. Utica was led by Abby Buchanan with six kills, Carlie Parsons with four kills and eight digs, Ellie Boggs with six kills, Emma Kimpel with four kills, two aces and 18 digs and Emilee Ellis with four aces, 10 digs and 12 assists. East Knox's stats were not available.
