The Mount Vernon Nazarene soccer program earned a win and suffered a loss in play this week.

The MVNU men's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 CL) defeated Point Park University (0-2-0, 0-0-0) by a score of 2-1 on Aug. 24 at Highmark Stadium. The women’s soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0) fell to Lawrence Technological University (1-1-0, 0-0-0) by a final score of 2-1.

The Cougars men’s team carried the momentum from Monday’s victory over Shawnee State into the first half against Point Park University. The visitors put seven shots up against the Pioneers. Sam Hershey scored the opening goal in the 13th minute after finding space just outside the box, firing a shot across the keeper and into the side net. Hershey has two goals in two games this season.

Tied at 1-1, MVNU controlled the last fifteen minutes and bagged the winner. After blazing by a defender, Joshua Sitney squared a ball into the run of freshman Tiago DeJesus, who struck for his first collegiate goal. DeJesus’ goal proved to be the game-winner for the Cougars.

The Cougars outshot the Pioneers 17-11 with seven shots on goal compared to Point Park’s six. The visitors also had seven corners compared to the host’s three.

Lady Cougars lose on the road

The Lady Cougars played their first away match of the season and were eager to extend their winning streak. The Blue Devils had other plans, however.

The scoring started right away as Lawrence Tech quickly got on the board in the five-minute with a goal by Bridget Finneran. The Lady Cougars spent the rest of the half trying to equalize as they had seven shots compared to Lawrence Tech’s two shots. They could not find the back of the net as the half ended.

Maddie Critzer was ready to go with the second half underway. She found the upper right-hand corner of the goal in the 49th minute, equalizing the game. Lawrence Tech did not let the goal go unanswered, as it scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 79th minute on a shot from Emily Horne.
