MOUNT VERNON – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team (1-0-0, 0-0-0) inaugurated CH4 Stadium and scored late to defeat Indiana University East (0-1-0, 0-0-0) 2-0 on Saturday.
It was a special night as the match was the first ever regular-season event to take place at the new CH4 Stadium. The Lady Cougars came out of the locker room excited for the opportunity and for the chance to make it a memorable night in front of their home fans.
After a scoreless first half, and with zeroes still on the board for both teams, Savannah Zambory put MVNU on top with a strike in the 67th minute. Sarah Townsend assisted on the goal.
In the 82nd minute, Ashley Townsend gave the Lady Cougars some breathing room. Caitlin Erlandson had the assist on Townsend’s goal.
MVNU dominated in total shots with 17 compared to the Red Wolves’ four. Of the 17 shots, 11 of them were on goal for the Lady Cougars.
Ashley Townsend led MVNU with seven shots, four of which were on goal. Zambory had four shots, with two of them on goal. Sarah Townsend finished the night with all three of her shots being on goal.
Hannah Miller made her first career start in goal and came away with a shutout. The freshman had two saves on the night.
MVNU next takes on Lawrence Tech in Southfield, Mich., on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
