Many junior and adult floral designers exhibited at the Knox County Fair Artistic Flower Show on July 28, under the theme “Under Construction: Home Sweet Home.” Each class title had to do with building one’s house.
Junior Best of Show was Kaitlyn Stulka, from Mount Vernon, entering under the title “Fireplace,” a design using fresh or dried plant materials of warm colors. Warm colors are tints, tones and shades of red, orange and yellow. Kaitlyn used many warm colors of zinnias, roses and solidago (Golden Rod) with twigs representing a fireplace.
Adult Best of Show in Section A was Angela Stulka, from Mount Vernon, entering a design under the title “Measuring Tape.” This was a design with no rule restrictions. Angela used moss, carthunus, eucalyptus, leather leaf fern, button mums, tree fern and sticks depicting different types of construction going on around the world with a yellow ribbon representing a measuring tape.
Most Creative Design in Section A was Jean Wyatt, Fredericktown Garden Club. Wyatt entered the class “Windows,” a transparency design. A transparency design is a three-dimensional creative design incorporating see-through material(s) placed in the design to give the illusion of depth and space beyond. Wyatt used a window frame and lace curtain with Free Spirit Roses, Baby’s Breath and Vinca Vine peeking through. This was in memory of her mother and her mother’s roses.
Adult Best of Show in Section B was Julie Divelbiss, North Liberty Garden Club, “Wall Decor.” A design with fresh or dried material in a wall pocket container that is flat on one side and hangs flat against the wall. Divelbiss used Takumi Ruby Buckwheat, artemisia, chameleon plant and Green Envy Euchinacea in a galvanized bucket. It was a traditional triangular design in a wall pocket.
Adult Most Creative Design in Section B was Debbie Minard, Apple Valley Garden Club, entering under “Double Sink.” Minard used dock, tansy, mop cyprus, mums and yellow shrub in two containers. It represented a double sink full of dirty dishes.
