GAMBIER – Donna Boone Lewis, 84, died June 28, 2022, in Gambier, Knox County, Ohio.
She was born in Washington, D.C. Oct. 3, 1937, to the late William Kyle Boone and Irvel Elizabeth Lowry Boone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Kyle C. Boone, and her sister, Kathleen B. Van Hoy.
In 1959, she graduated from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia, with a bachelor’s degree in English. She taught English for over 40 years in public and private schools in Virginia and North Carolina. After 15 years of teaching at The Asheville School, she left the classroom to take the position of director of publications and public relations. She also directed the school’s plays for over 20 years and was school archivist. She retired in 2003. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution - Lucy Knox Chapter, The Book Club, and The Town and Country Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband, Mays L. Lewis, Jr.; three daughters, Elizabeth L. Wainwright (Nick) of Lawrenceville, GA, Margaret L. Lewis (Joel Gunderson) of Gambier and Katherine L. Lockett of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren, Alexander Jaeger, Samuel Jaeger, Solvi Gunderson, Mays Gunderson, Cora Gunderson, Kayla Lockett, Kyle Lockett and Kate Lockett; sister-in-law Helen K. Boone and brother-in-law Duard W. Van Hoy; nephews, John C. Van Hoy, William K. Van Hoy, and Kirk C. Boone; nieces, Kyla B. Fain, Elizabeth H. Boone, and Kathleen C. Boone; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at Harcourt Parish Episcopal Church in Gambier on July 24 at 12 p.m., and at The Asheville School, Asheville, N.C. on Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m. in Boyd Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Nebo, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Donna B. Lewis Archives Fund, Asheville School, 360 Asheville School Rd., Asheville NC 28806.
