MOUNT VERNON – Food For The Hungry opened a special summer grant aimed to help local organizations that fill the food gap for children and teens during summer vacation throughout Knox County.
Through the past and present generosity of Knox Countians, reserve funds were available so that local organizations' requests could be fully funded. In this, FFTH continues to honor the wishes of donors to support their local community year-round. Following an open application process, FFTH awarded a total of $27,800 in grant funds to these local organizations:
Act Food Pantry – $2,000
Acts Food Pantry is once a month but is open every Thursday from noon to 2:45 p.m. for emergency situations. Many opportunities are available through this food pantry, including enough meals for a week, taxables, clothing for unexpected situations and a fresh food program for clients every week.
Central Christian Food Pantry – $2,000
Central Christian Food Pantry provides food to families in Knox County and provides extra food for children during the summer months.
CHOMP – $2,000
CHOMP is a community-wide fresh produce market that provides community members with healthy food options once a month.
Covenant Church Food Pantry – $2,000
Covenant Church provides food for those in need in Knox County. It provides a family of four with enough food for two weeks. Extra food is used to reach out to families with children during the summer.
Church on the Rise – $2,000
Church on the Rise serves food and non-food items to people in the community in need through a monthly giveaway. Emergency food is also provided at least 10 times a month for those in urgent need.
The Escape Zone Youth Center – $2,000
The Escape Zone provides a safe place for children ages 10-18 to congregate, be fed and have fun while remaining under supervision.
Fredericktown United Methodist Church – $2,000
Fredericktown United Methodist Church provides a community hot meal called PeaceMeals on a weekly basis. All meals are prepared and served by volunteers.
Freedom Center – $1,800
The Freedom Center is a nonprofit behavioral health agency that serves clients who are working on making lifestyle changes that are difficult to make. These changes require motivation, determination and self-control. This community wraps resources around individuals that are unable to provide basic needs for themselves and their families. Due to the high rate of needs, there are times community resources are unable to reach every need. The Freedom Center has been able to fill in the gaps its clients are experiencing.
Millwood Church of Christ – $2,000
Millwood Church of Christ provides a free-standing sharing shed open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This shed has shelving for non-perishable food items and taxable items. There is also a refrigerator/freezer for fresh items. No paperwork is required, and neighbors are encouraged to take what they need and leave what they can.
Mount Vernon Police Chaplains – $2,000
The Mount Vernon Police Chaplains are available at all hours to provide emergency assistance, including but not limited to feeding families that tragically lose caregivers.
Mount Vernon Seventh Day Adventist Hill Church – $2,000
The Mount Vernon Seventh Day Adventist Hill Church serves a homemade hot meal every Saturday afternoon/evening. This meal is free to anyone who comes.
Say A Prayer Ministries – $2,000
Say A Prayer Ministries is a church that has a food pantry called InJoy Food Pantry in Martinsburg. Say A Prayer Ministries can also help families with emergency needs between outreach days.
The Salvation Army – $2,000
The Salvation Army is a social work service that includes feeding families, providing emergency utility assistance, case management and after-school child care and summer day camp.
TouchPointe Marriage & Family Resources – $2,000
TouchPointe is a faith-based nonprofit that focuses on relationships and healthy families. TouchPointe not only provides neighbors in recovery a safe place to go and learn about Jesus, they also provide job readiness classes, career support, sober support groups and relational healing classes. TouchPointe supports families during the transition of graduating from rehab centers and individuals on both drug court dockets needing additional help and resources.
