Lady Jackets Top Lexington 11-6, lose to Ashland, 7-3

The Mount Vernon Lady Yellow Jackets split a pair of games this week, defeating Lexington 11-6 on May 9 and dropping a 6-3 decision to Ashland on May 10.

Coming off back-to-back 17-0 wins over Mansfield, the Lady Jackets scored early, then waited until the sixth inning for their bats to re-awaken against the Minutemen.

Mount Vernon took a 2-0 lead in the first. Kennedi Endsley grounded a one-out single, and after an error and a ground out that scored Endsley, Emma Calkins singled to center to drive in the second run.

After the Lady Jackets added a run in the third, Lexington put up a run in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Each team scored twice in the fifth, and then Mount Vernon took control with five runs in the sixth. With one out, Lilly Erb smacked a single to center, and Endsley followed with a line drive single to center. Mac Schlosser drove in a run with a single to center to give MV the lead, 6-5. After Endsley scored on an errant pickoff attempt, Mckenzie Krownapple hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it 8-5. Calkins walked, and an error followed by an Addison Christopher single made it 9-5. Grace Bates lined a single to center and MV’s lead was 10-5.

Outhitting Lexington 13-9, Mount Vernon’s attack was led by Krownapple and Schlosser with three hits each and Erb and Endsley with two hits apiece. Krownapple had three RBIs to pace run-producers. Rhyli Pope went the distance in the circle, striking out five to gain the win.

The following day, Mount Vernon started well but fell behind early and could not make up ground against the Ashland Lady Arrows. The Lady Jackets went up 3-0 in the first on a hit batter, two errors and a one-out, two-run single by Krownapple, followed by a two-out run-scoring single by Christopher. But that was all the offense could muster, as they were held scoreless the rest of the way. Ashland got a run back in the first and put up a five-spot in the second to take control.

Mount Vernon scratched out five hits, led by Erb’s two hits. Emily Burke was strong in relief of starter Pope, who was victimized by three Jacket errors. Burke pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed one unearned run.
