Cardington-Lincoln scores 20 twice against Mount Gilead

The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates ran their season record to 19-1 and 12-0 in KMAC play with a 21-4 demolition of Mount Gilead (4-11, 0-10), May 4. It was the second time in three days that C-L put up 20 runs against Mount Gilead, having won 20-0 on May 2.

In the May 2 game, Genevieve Longsdorf pitched a five-inning perfect game, and an eight-run fourth by C-L triggered the mercy rule after it put up three, four and five runs in the first three innings. In that game, eight Lady Pirates divided up 17 hits, led by Hailee Edgell, 4-for-4. Genevieve Longsdorf, Makayla Linkous and Dana Bertke each had three hits. Edgell drove in seven runs, and Longsdorf plated four as both players smashed three doubles each. Longsdorf faced the minimum 15 batters over five innings, getting them all and striking out nine.

On May 4, Cardington scored four in the top of the first, but Mount Gilead bats woke up for a run in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Pirates put the game away with a 13-run second and scored in every inning to take a 21-4 win from their hosts.

Cardington-Lincoln outhit the Indians 21-7 and reaped the harvest of three home runs – one each by Edgell, Riley Burchett and Ari Simpson. Edgell again went 4-for-4, and Simpson went 4-for-5. Abbi Hardwick and Linkous each collected three hits. Edgell finished with five RBIs, and Burchett, who was 1-for-1 with four walks, drove in four.

Simpson pitched a complete game in the circle for Cardington-Lincoln, striking out seven.

 

Utica wins see-saw battle over Zanesville, 6-5

The Utica Lady Redskins protected home turf and defeated the Zanesville Blue Devils, 6-5, on May 4 for their third win of the year.

The game went back and forth, with Utica taking  3-0 lead in the first, only to see Zanesville come back to tie it with three runs in the third. The first-inning action started with two-out singles by Cass Fouty, Karleigh Lees and Kayleigh Crowe, driving in Fouty. Crowe stole second, allowing Lees to score and Lauren Schmitt singled to drive in Utica’s third run.

The Lady Indians took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth, and the Blue Devils tied it up with one of their own. In the fifth, Utica took a 6-4 lead it never relinquished. The winning rally started with a lead-off single by Carlie Hill. With one out, Lees belted a run-scoring double to give Utica the 5-4 lead. Crowe singled Lees to third. Crow stole second and on the play, Lees scored the decisive run.

Utica outhit Zanesville 13-11 and was led by Crow, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple and one RBI. Hill connected for three hits, and Lees knocked out two hits, including the double. The Lady Redskins ran wild on the base paths with 12 stolen bases. Lees stole three bags, and four Uticans grabbed two apiece.

 

Lady Blue Devils hold off Lady Bulldogs, 7-4

Danville made a four-run fourth stand up, tacked two more on in the sixth and withstood a Bulldogs rally in the seventh to take a 7-4 victory, May 4.

Ahead 1-0, Danville started things rolling in the third after a one-out error brought Keaura Shilling to third. Addison Mickley singled in Shilling to make it 2-0. Alicia Humphrey walked and Cami Newbold singled to make the score 3-0. With two outs, Grace Gronberg singled in the fourth run in the inning for a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, down 7-2, East Knox made some noise as Maddy Cotsamire led off with a single. With one out, Natalie Smith walked, and with two out, Gracie Sheasby singled in two runs.  A hard ground out to Danville second baseman Shilling ended the game.

Danville outhit East Knox 11-5, as five Lady Devils reached base on two hits apiece. Gronberg and Humphrey each had two RBIs.

Cotsamire paced EK with a 2-for-3 afternoon, and Sheasby drove in two. Humphrey went the distance in the circle to get the win for Danville.

Danville improved to 13-6 and 6-5 in KMAC play, and East Knox fell to 9-8, 6-6.

 

Lady Freddies score in bunches in 10-3 win over Lady Trojans

The Fredericktown softball squad put up crooked numbers in four different innings to coast to a 10-3 win over Centerburg on May 4.

The Freddies led 2-1 after an inning and 4-1 after two. Centerburg clawed back with a pair in the third to make it 4-3, but the Lady Freddies brought three runs across in the fourth and three more in the seventh to win by seven.

The Freddies outhit Centerburg 13-9. Fredericktown got a 4-for-5 day from Taylor Brown and three hits from Emma Hatfield to lead the hit parade. All three of Hatfield’s hits were doubles, and Brown hit two 2-baggers. Getting run production from the top of the lineup, Fredericktown got two RBIs each from its 1-2-3 hitters – Brown, Lainy Partington and Jess Montalvo.

Kennedy Algire pitched a complete game for the Freddies’ win, allowing one earned run and striking out four.

Centerburg’s bats were paced by Chloe Goulter and Chesnee Fairall, who each had three hits, and Harley Webb with two. Goulter hit two doubles, and Fairall and Webb each bashed one.
