Cougar men, women perform on the track at Cedarville

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s and women’s track and field teams continued their outdoor season on Saturday, March 26, in the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open, hosted by Cedarville University.

On the women’s side, top Cougar performers included the 400-meter relay team of Rachel Wilson, Missy Emery, Grace Chesser and Maddie Kitchen, who  placed second with a time of 54.45 seconds. Emery also placed sixth out of 19 in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.41 seconds. Macy Weaver placed sixth out of 29 runners in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:16.23. Ashley Burgess placed ninth out of 32 in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.04. And Morgan Maffett placed 10 out of 19 throwers in the women’s shot put with a throw of 10.48 meters.

For the men, field performers showed well. Christian Graber placed third in the long jump with a jump of 6.26 meters. Zeke VanArsdalen placed third in the pole vault, clearing 4.22 meters. Zach Jenney placed fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 44.22 meters. On the track, Colin Gaines and Evan Hodkinson placed 17th and 18th out of 80 runners in the 1,500-meter run with times of 4:20.78 and 4:22.16, respectively.

MVNU volleyball closes out season with close loss to Siena Heights

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s volleyball team (11-14, 4-10) fell to the receiving-votes Siena Heights University Saints (15-6, 9-5) by three sets to two on Saturday, March 26.

The Cougars battled against the Saints all day long. MVNU took the first set 27-25, lost set two 25-23, won set three 25-21, before losing the final two sets by scores of 25-20 and 15-12. This closes out the season for the Cougars, who battled all season, with 16 of their 25 matches this season extending to four or five sets.

In this match, Spencer Stanley and Landon Ewers each had 13 kills on the day. Stanley had seven digs, while Ewers contributed three. Luke Funte chipped in with 10 kills and seven digs. Caden Donaldson had nine kills and 12 digs on the afternoon. Riley Barretto contributed seven kills. Jaysen Matsumoto was busy with 47 assists and nine digs, and Daniel Skrzypchak had 12 digs and added two assists.
