MOUNT VERNON – Shirley Marie Braddock, 84, of Fort Myers, FL, and former Knox County resident passed into eternity on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers following a two-year battle with cancer.
Shirley was born on Aug. 4,1937, in Circleville, OH, to the late Fred and Esta (Baker) Heigle. She was a 1955 graduate of Marion Harding High School. Shirley married Gordon Braddock on March 24, 1957, and together they operated a family farm for over 40 years. She also embarked on a second career in nursing, obtaining her LPN degree in 1980 and her RN degree in 1988 from Central Ohio Technical College. Shirley retired with over 20 years of service from Knox Community Hospital (KCH) in 2001. While at KCH, Shirley became an oncology certified nurse and served as an oncology coordinator for 9 years helping to establish a local satellite cancer clinic providing treatment to patients associated with the OSU James Hospital in Columbus. During her nursing career, Shirley was known for her care and devotion to patients.
Shirley served as a Hospice of Knox County (HKC) nurse volunteer for 15 years and was also a HKC board member for 8 years. Upon retirement, she and Gordon took a number of trips and eventually purchased a winter home to enjoy the Florida sunshine in Punta Gorda, FL. Following Gordon’s passing, Shirley moved to Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers, FL. While in Punta Gorda and Fort Myers, she continued to serve in a variety of volunteer roles.
She was a long-time member of Green Valley United Methodist Church and most recently a member of The Village Church at Shellpoint in Fort Myers.
Shirley is survived by her devoted children, son Michael (Carolyn) Braddock of Tennessee and her daughters Vicki (Terry) Brooks of Missouri and Becky Braddock of Ohio; and grandchildren John Braddock, Jessica (Blake Hansen) Braddock, Lisa (Adam) Smith, John Brooks and Adam Brooks, along with one great-grandchild, Evan Smith. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Gordon; infant daughter Lisa Ruth Braddock; sisters Janith Heigle, Ruby Heigle, and Ruth Hedges; along with a brother Ernest Heigle.
Friends may call on Saturday, March 26, at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon from 10 - 11 a.m. A Celebration of Life service will follow, beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Ebenezer Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life service will also be held on Saturday, April 2, at 10 a.m. at The Village Church at Shell Point in Fort Myers, FL.
