Young people play basketball on Friday nights at the Escape ZoneB | Escape Zone/Facebook

Volunteers at the Escape Zone, a  nonprofit youth center in Mount Vernon, were honored at a dinner March 5 at the National Guard Armory, Terry Walter, president of the board organization, told the Mount Vernon News.

Each Friday night, around 40 young people go to the Escape zone, Walter said.

"Some of the volunteers play basketball with the kids," he said. "Some will cook pizzas or pretzels for them. Some will sit and talk with the kids."

Volunteers even provide guitar lessons to the young people at the center.

"We have had eight to 10 kids who have taken lessons," Walter said. "At the end of the lessons, they get a guitar."

Academic tutoring is also provided by volunteers from local colleges, Walter said.

Some of the volunteers will be honored with plaques for 10 years of service to the Escape Zone.

"We have others who volunteered during the COVID-19 pandemic and they will get stick pens," said Walter.

The Escape Zone is now in its 20th year of helping young people.

"We need more volunteers," Walter said.
