MOUNT VERNON – Sue Harwell, 84, of Mount Vernon passed away on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Aug. 15, 1937, in Knox County, Ohio, the daughter of Dale and Frances (Ulrey) Prior. Sue graduated from Utica High School and attended the Mount Vernon Business School.

She retired in 2001 after 24 years as a customer service representative for Farm Credit Services. Sue was an active member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church, KCH Auxiliary, Ohio Eastern Star #236, Epsilon Iota Sorority, Professional Secretaries Association, Women of the Moose and Gay Street United Methodist UMW Sarah Circle. Sue also volunteered many hours at Knox Community Hospital, Interchurch Social Services, Salvation Army, Ohio Benefit Bank and was commonly known as “Mother Hen” for Ohio Junior Miss.

Sue is survived by her children, Greg (Julie) Butler, Dave (Mary Beth) Butler and Pam (Jeff) Shafer and Buddy (Kim) Harwell; grandchildren, Mattie Butler, Bailie (Zac) Miller, Brady (Anna Durbin) Harwell, Cruz (Jenna) Harwell, Brody Harwell and Kyle (Lauren) Watkins; great-grandchildren, Ben Watkins, Rylee Miller and Aubrey Miller; two sisters, Sharon Kennedy and Phyllis Ann Buxton; and a nephew, Brian (Marcie) Scoles.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Harwell; and a son, Bryce Harwell.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, Feb. 25, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Lasater Chapel. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gay Street United Methodist Church, Hospice of Knox County, Capital City Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
