Zavaleta breaks records for Lords, but Kenyon swimmers swept by RedHawks
Coming off a pair of dual wins against Case Western Reserve University and Ohio Northern University, the Kenyon College men’s swimming and diving team traveled to Athens, Ohio, to take on Division I Miami (OH) University. The Lords suffered their first dual loss of the season, falling to the RedHawks 183-117, and the Ladies lost their first dual meet of the year, 182.5-117.5.
The Lords posted seven individual wins against Miami (OH), highlighted by Israel Zavaleta breaking his own school records in the one- and three-meter diving.
Kenyon logged their first win of the dual in the 1,000-yard freestyle as Bryan Fitzgerald finished the race with a time of 9:20.79. Later in the dual, Fitzgerald posted an NCAA "B" cut qualifying time when he won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:33.18. The Lords won both backstroke events with preliminary qualifying times as Spencer Pruett won the 100-yard (48.94) and Yurii Kosian won the 200-yard (1:45.97). In the 200-yard individual medley, Noah Hargrove posted his own "B" cut time, winning in 1:51.37. A "B" cut is a classification for a swimmer or a swim. National Age Group Time Standard B time is faster than the C time standard and slower than the BB time standard.
On the boards, Zavaleta won both diving events by breaking his own school records. The sophomore diver posted a score of 388.80 in the one-meter and a score of 405.68 in the three-meter.
RedHawks deal Ladies first dual loss of the season
The Kenyon College Ladies won five events, but fell to the NCAA Division I RedHawks. The dual meet defeat was the first of the season for the Ladies, who saw their record slip to 5-1.
First-year Kira Bowling got the competition started for Kenyon by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 10:16.17. Miami won the next couple of events, but Kenyon got back in the win column when another first-year, Jennah Fadely, won the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best and NCAA "B"’ cut time of 1:02.09.
Following that, the Ladies rang up three more event wins that came along with NCAA "B" cut times. The first of those three was junior Alexandra White, who took the 50-yard freestyle in 23.12. Next, first-year Gabrielle Wei won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.28 and, later, senior Crile Hart claimed the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.67.
Other "B" cuts logged by the Ladies included Sarah Hoffman in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.43) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.32); Hart in the 100-yard backstroke (55.34); Ania Axas in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.55); Celia Ford in the 100-yard butterfly (56.13) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.34); Emmie Mirus in the 50-yard freestyle (23.38); Olivia Smith in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.59) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.06); and, finally, Fadely in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.08).
