Lady Pirates improve to 9-0 after 62nd straight win in KMAC
The Cardington-Lincoln girls basketball team continued its dominance with a 54-37 win over Mount Gilead on Dec. 22 to improve to 9-0 on the season.
Getting douible-figures scoring from four players, C-L led from start to finish to keep this perfect season alive. The Lady Pirates led 15-10 after one frame thanks to Kambry Edwards putting up five of her 12 points, including a three-pointer. After one half it was 32-16 Pirates, with Beth Hardwick hitting a pair of threes on her way to 10 total points. The Pirates went into the second half with confidence outscoring Mount Gilead 13-9, with Karsyn Edwards scoring five points. The final frame saw an Indians advantage of 11-9, but it was too little too late.
Leading the Pirates in scoring was Kambry Edwards with 12 points. Also hitting double figures were Karsyn Edwards, Hardwick and Mikayla Linkous with 10 points each.
Kambry Edwards led the team with six rebounds, as well as posting four assists and a pair of steals. Karsyn Edwards added five boards, four assists and three steals. Dana Bertke had five points, five boards, two steals and two assists.
Leading Mount Gilead was Madilyn Elson with 14 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, which included a pair of threes. Aubrey Thomas also hit double figures with 10 points.
While the Pirates shot only 35% from the field, Cardington-Lincoln was successful from long range, hitting 50% from beyond the arc. The Pirates outrebounded Mt. Gilead whole also putting up 12 assists compared to seven and 12 steals compared to four.
The win was the 47th consecutive regular season win for the Pirates, who have also won 62 straight KMAC matchups.
Northmor Golden Knights tame Galion Tigers, 70-30
Northmor improved to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in KMAC play with a 70-30 drubbing of Galion last week.
The 40-point win came easy for the Golden Knights, who put together four strong quarters and led from the outset. Northmor controlled play on both ends of the court with solid play from across the roster.
Northmor received scoring contributions from nine girls. Lexi Wenger led with 17 points in 24 minutes on 5-of-7 from the field and 7-of-10 at the line. Regan Swihart hit 4-of-7 from two-point range and was 6-for-14 at the foul stripe for 14 points in 23 minutes. Emma Marshall hit 3-of-4 from three-point range for her nine points in only seven minutes on the court.
Swihart led the Knights with six rebounds, and Wenger contributed four assists.
On defense, the Golden Knights were led by Riley Johnson and Brooklyn Denison with four steals each, while Wenger and Lauren Johnson each had three steals. Swihart, Riley Johndon and Lauren Johnson each has three deflections.
Danville beats Belpre 49-46 in MVNU Wendy’s Classic
On Dec. 23, Danville's dynamic duo of Brooklynn Hess and Ella Proper led the way to secure a 49-46 win over the Belpre Golden Eagles.
Belpre had the advantage early with a 16-7 lead despite Hess starting off hot with seven points, including a three. The second quarter was all Blue Devils, outscoring Belpre 15-7 with Hess and Proper each scoring five points. Danville was shut down with only five third-quarter points, compared to 11 for Belpre, but Proper put together a huge fourth quarter with eight points to secure the victory.
Hess finished with 16 points, and Proper had 15 points. Kylee Hess added eight points in the win.
