Chafin deadly at the line in Mount Gilead’s overtime win over Northmor, 79-70  

Elijah Chafin calmly hit 15 of 17 at the line and scored 10 points in overtime as Mount Gilead (3-3, 2-2 KMAC) came from behind to take down the Northmor Golden Knights (3-3, 2-2 KMAC), 79-70, Tuesday night.

Grant Bentley took control of the game early, sinking three threes and scoring 13 of the Golden Knights’ 16 points in the first, to earn a five-point lead. Mount Gilead spread their 11 points among four scorers in the first.

The Indians outscored the Knights 13-11 in the second and trailed at halftime, 27-24. Mount Gilead’s Chafin led the way with six in the second, and Bentley matched him with six of his own.

Northmor extended its lead to six with an 18-15 third quarter. Paul Butterman scored seven and Chafin six in the quarter for the Knights, while Logan Mariotti kept pace with nine points for the Indians.

Mount Gilead caught up in the fourth and tied it at 62-62. Chafin went 6-for-6 at the line in an eight-point fourth for the Indians, and Grant bombed in two threes and nine points for the Knights.

The Indians rocked the extra period to win. In the overtime frame, Chafin went 7-for-8 at the line and swished a long three for 10 points to decide the game in favor of Mount Gilead. Graesin Cass sank two threes for Northmor in the period.

For the game, Mount Gilead was led by Chafin with 33 points, Butterman with 20 and Aaron Gannon with 10. Bentley led Northmor with 30, Cass scored 16, Mariotti had 14 and Max Lower hit for 10.

 

Scots done in by second-quarter blitz, loses to Marion Harding, 75- 59

After a blazing first-period score fest, the Highland Scots (1-4, 0-2 MOAC) were bombed in the second by Marion Harding (3-2, 2-1 MOAC) and fell 75-59 Tuesday night.

Four threes and 14 points by the Presidents’ Riley Keeran put Marion Harding on top after one by a 26-22 count. The Scots stayed close on nine points by Gavin Hankins and two threes by Jordan Bellamy. In the second, everything went right for the Presidents as they exploded on a 26-6 second-quarter run in which the Scots went without a field goal, scoring all six points at the line. Seven players scored for Harding in the frame to lead at halftime, 52-27.

The Scots fought back behind Brock Church to win the third, 18-14, and the fourth, 14-9, but it wasn’t enough to undo the second-quarter blitz. Church scored 10 points in the third and eight in the fourth to close the deficit to 16.

Church finished with 25 points and Hankins 13 for Highland. Keeran finished with 26 points to pace Harding.

 

Jackets command the fourth to beat Wooster, 63-61

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets overcame a rough start and a strong third quarter by the Wooster Generals (3-2, 2-0 OCC) to win at home, 63-61, Tuesday night.

Wooster finished off the first quarter with a 19-14 lead, but Beau Bridges and Nolan Belcher cut the deficit to two, and the Jackets trailed 29-27 at halftime.

The third quarter was much like the first, with the Generals taking a 24-21 advantage to begin the fourth ahead 53-48.

Once again, Bridges and Belcher came alive, and the Yellow Jackets outscored Wooster 15-8 to nail down a two-point victory.

Mount Vernon was paced by Bridges with 25 points (three threes), Belcher finished with 19 (also hit three threes) and Owynn Gleason had eight (with two threes). Trevor Buttke, Caden Rowland and Logan Kirby each hit a three-point shot for the Jackets.

Bulldogs run away in the fourth, beat Freddies, 43-32

For East Knox (4-0, 4-0 KMAC) it was all or nothing against Fredericktown (2-4, 1-3 KMAC) on Tuesday as they had trouble in the first and third quarters and smoked the second and fourth to take down the Freddies 43-32.

The game started slowly as Fredericktown took an 8-6 lead on six points by Brady Lester and two by Teegan Ruhl. Payton Lester hit four in the first for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs stepped it up with a 20-point second as Shane Knepp took over for EK, hitting three from beyond the arc and two free throws for 11 points. Ruhl led Fredericktown with four. East Knox led at halftime, 26-17.

Fredericktown came back with an 11-3 third to cut the EK lead to 29-28. Carson Steinmetz’s three was the only shot to go through the net for EK in the third.

The fourth quarter saw Knepp tally six to pace East Knox to the victory on a 14-4 frame.

East Knox was led by Knepp with 19 points, and Dillon Moreland scored nine.

Fredericktown had Brady Lester and Ruhl with 11 apiece. Ruhl was 5-for-5 at the line.

 

Trojans stay unbeaten, crush Blue Devils, 70-36

Unbeaten Centerburg ran away in the first half and coasted to a 70-36 victory over Danville on Tuesday. Centerburg (5-0, 3-0 KMAC) took a 16-point lead in the first over Danville (1-4, 2-3 KMAC) and by halftime had the game in hand at 45-17.

Mckinnon Mead got the Trojans off on a strong note with two threes and 11 first-quarter points. Colton Martin added seven as the Trojans scored 23 points to seven for the Blue Devils.

In the second, six Trojans scored, with Landon Griffith and Mead hitting for seven each in a 22-10 quarter. For the second consecutive quarter, Wyatt Weckesser led Danville with four points in the frame.

In the third, Levi Houck led Centerburg with eight points. Walker Weckesser sank two threes for Danville, but the Trojans increased their lead to 60-30 after three.

The Trojans hit for only 10 in the fourth, but held the Dogs to six. Centerburg’s Isiah Reynolds hit four points.

Scoring leaders were Centerburg’s Mead with 22 and Colton Martin with 11. Danville was led by Wyatt Weckesser with 10 and Walker Weckesser with nine.
