Wenger scores 1,000th career point, but Northmor falls to Danville
Danville took an insurmountable 21-point lead in the first and rained on a milestone evening by Northmor senior shooting guard Lexi Wenger in finishing off a 67-52 victory Saturday.
Wenger scored 20 points in reaching and surpassing the 1,000-point mark in her high school career.
The Blue Devils (2-2, 1-1 KMAC) took a 26-5 lead over Northmor (2-3, 0-2 KMAC) after the first quarter on 11 points from Jaylyn Workman and scoring contribution from five girls – Workman, Alenah Boeshart, Ella Proper, Brooklyn Hess and Kylee Hess. Wenger scored all five Golden Knights points in the first and 11 of their 17 points in the second.
The second quarter saw each team score 17 to give Danville a 43-22 lead at halftime. The same five girls scored for Danville in the second, with Proper and Brooklyn Hess leading the way with five each.
In the third, the Golden Knights hit 26 points but could only cut the lead to nine. Ironically, when Northmor made its 26-point assault, Wenger tallied only five, while Brooklyn Dennison scored nine and Paige Caudill had nine (on three threes). Reagan Swihart also hit a three. Four Blue Devils swished the twine to maintain the Danville lead. The Golden Knights’ run stopped there, and Northmor was held to only four fourth-quarter points to seal the win for the Blue Devils. Workman hit six in the quarter for Danville.
For the game, Danville was led by Workman with 21 points. Boeshart had 14 points, Proper scored 12 points and Hess hit for 10 points. For Northmor Wenger finished with 20 points, Caudill scored 11 points and Dennison nine.
Lady Pirates move to 5-0 with 54-22 win over East Knox
The Cardington-Lincoln girls basketball team remained undefeated and increased its season record to 5-0, 2-0 in KMAC play, with a 32-point win over East Knox (1-2, 1-1 KMAC), 54-22.
Cardington-Lincoln took a 14-4 first quarter lead, led by six points from Dana Bertke and five by Beth Hardwick. Hardwick scored 10 in the second quarter to lead the Lady Pirates to a 27-16 half-time lead. Laura Keith scored 10 of the Lady Bulldogs’ 12 points in the second and finished with 12
Holding East Knox to only six points in the second half, the Lady Pirates pulled away with a 27-3 third-quarter run to go ahead 54-19 after three. C-L saw scoring from seven girls in the quarter, then scored zero in the fourth to keep from piling it on.
Hardwick led Cardington-Lincoln with 19 points for the game, Bertke hit 12 and Kambry Edwards scored eight.
