Scots fly high in tournament after volleyball sweeps Granville, Bloom-Carroll
The Highland Scots earned their way into the OHSSA volleyball playoffs and then advanced to the second round with sweeps over Granville and Bloom-Carroll.
The Flying Scots (22-4 and 14-0 MOAC), advanced to the playoffs with a 25-15, 25-7, 25-9 district semifinal win versus Granville on Oct. 27.
Senior Kendall Stover led the charge with 12 kills, freshman Kameron Stover added six kills, senior Emma West and junior Brooke Schott had five kills each, and the Scots had four kills each from senior Ashlynn Belcher and freshman Larsen Terrill. Senior Brylinn Tuggle led the serving attack with six aces, Belcher added four aces, and junior Zoya Winkelfoos had three aces.
On Saturday, the Scots faced Bloom-Carroll in the district championship match, their eighth in nine years, winning titles in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2019. They swept that match as well, 25-10, 25-15, 25-17.
Leading the Scots in the playoffs were Kendall Stover with 20 kills, nine digs and three aces, Emma West with eight kills, Brylinn Tuggle with 22 digs, Zoya Winklefoos with 11 digs, sophomore Alexis Eusey with three aces, Brooke Schott with 3 blocks and Ashlynn Belcher with 35 assists.
Having won their first-round match, the Scots move on to the second round of the 2021 OHSAA volleyball regional playoffs Thursday, Nov. 4, against Gates Mills Gilmour Academy at Lexington High School at 6 p.m.
Cardington-Lincoln Pirates continue to roll over the net
Cardington-Lincoln, 21-3, continued on in its season with a 25-9, 25-23, 25-23 sweep over Fairbanks, Oct. 29 and a first-round playoff win, 3-1 over Johnstown Northridge on Oct. 30.
The Fairbanks match saw a first set blowout in the nonleague challenge, followed by two tight sets before the Panthers were sent packing. Senior Audrey Brininger led the Pirates with 14 kills and 11 digs, junior Payton Goodman had 13 kills, junior Izzy Wickline had four blocks, junior Cadie Long had 15 digs, senior Maggie Wade had eight digs, senior Kayleigh Ufferman had seven digs and junior Jadine Mills had 31 assists.
Moving on to the OHSSA Mount Vernon District 2, Division 3 playoffs, the Pirates continued their roll with a 3-1 win over Johnstown Northridge (18-6).
Cardington-Lincoln was led by Audrey Brininger with 23 kills and 14 digs. Payton Goodman had 12 kills, Madison Linkous had 10 kills, Izzy Wickline had 3 blocks, Cadie Long had 27 digs and Jadine Mills had 45 assists.
The Pirates next play the next round at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (20-5) Thursday at 6 p.m.
