MOUNT VERNON – Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day is Oct. 13 and represents the opportunity to raise awareness and greater understanding about this aggressive stage of the cancer journey.
According to the American Cancer Society, Metastatic (metastasized) Breast Cancer is stage four cancer that has "spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body." Treatment options are available that can slow down the growth of tumors, reduce symptoms and add time to the lives of those fighting this disease.
Some treatment options may include a combination of surgery, hormone therapy, radiation, chemotherapy, medication, and immunotherapy. There is not a cure for metastatic breast cancer, but treatment options are available that can help.
Knox Community Hospitals Center for Cancer Care, our Primary Care providers, the General Surgery team encourage you to learn more about how you can prevent your risk of breast cancer. You can honor those with metastatic breast cancer by talking with your provider about your risk factors. Learn more by visiting cancer.org/cancer/breast-cancer/risk-and-prevention.html.
