We all like to put our best foot forward, but sometimes that means choosing between a foot with two hammertoes and a foot with heel pain, according to a press release from Knox Community Hospital.
“I’m always surprised by the amount of foot pain people put up with,” said Dr. Abigail Elliott, podiatrist at KCH. “It’s a shame because sore feet really put a damper on everyday activities. I want people to know that chronic foot pain is not normal. Unchecked foot pain can lead to other issues like hip and back pain, so it’s really important to get your sore feet checked.”
Podiatrists are doctors who care specifically for foot and ankle complications caused by sprains and broken bones, arthritis, skin and nail conditions, diabetes, bunions and more. Many foot problems can be handled non-invasively, while others require surgery.
To get your feet ready for the fall and winter, Elliott suggests the following:
- Wear supportive shoes with structural arch support.
- Wash daily with warm (not hot) water. Dry between toes well to avoid excess moisture.
- Apply a rich moisturizer to the top and bottom of the foot, avoiding the areas between the toes.
- Trim nails straight across.
