MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Schnormeier Gallery will present “A Watercolor Journey,” a solo alumna exhibition by Karen Heidler (’94). This exhibit opened Oct. 4 and will be on display in the gallery until Nov. 12. A gallery talk will be given at the Schnormeier Gallery on Nov. 12 at 5 p.m., with a closing reception to follow from 6-8 p.m.

Taking years to develop, Heidler’s highly realistic style will pull the viewer into the story of her paintings, according to a news release. This exhibit also includes some of her earlier college paintings, giving the viewer a glimpse of her progression from hopeful college student to internationally recognized watercolorist.

Heidler was born in southwestern Pennsylvania. She received her bachelor of fine arts from MVNU in 1994. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. Her work is featured in Splash: The Best of Watercolor 19, 21 and upcoming Splash 23 (in 2022). She has received international recognition with awards from The National Watercolor Society, Signature American Watermedia International Exhibition, Transparent Watercolor Society, Women in Watercolor International Competition and The Florida Watercolor Society.

When it comes to painting, her philosophy is to be in control of the watercolors as she creates highly realistic paintings of her favorite subjects. Watercolor fits her personality: precise, attention to detail, intense focus and follow through, according to the release. Her paintings reflect who she is and communicates her desire to connect with nature while inviting others along for the journey.

She lives in Spring Hill, Fla., with her husband, three adult children and her pet muses.

The Schnormeier Gallery is at 221 S. Main St., Mount Vernon, on the first floor of MVNU’s Buchwald Center. It is open Monday through Friday, from 1-5 p.m. For more information, contact the Schnormeier gallery at artgallery@mvnu.edu.
