Colonoscopy is the gold standard screening procedure when it comes to detecting precancerous polyps and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. Although it’s recommended for people over age 45, many people put it off because they aren’t symptomatic. In the early stages, precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer may not cause symptoms, so getting screened is your best defense towards early detection. With Knox Community Hospital’s Express Endo service, it’s easier and more convenient than ever to schedule your procedure without leaving home.

“We offer a quick phone screen conducted by one of our skilled nurses to go over a person’s medical and family history, symptoms, medications, etc.,” said Amber Jordan, BSN, RN, director of the department of primary and specialty care. “We capture all the information we need without the patient having to come in for a paid office visit when eligible.”

“Once a person is deemed eligible, paperwork is sent to their home that includes directions for the procedure preparation, and a scheduler follows up to book the date of the procedure. If an office visit would be most beneficial for the person, a quick referral is sent and they are able to be easily scheduled with one of our surgeons,” she added.

Early detection of most types of cancers leads to better patient outcomes and higher cure rates. Whether you’re under the age of 45 or over, if you’re experiencing blood in the stool, black or tarry looking stool, abdominal pain that doesn’t go away or unexplained weight loss, or have a family history of colon cancer, you may be a candidate for a colonoscopy.

Colonoscopies and endoscopies are performed by Knox Community Hospital general surgeons under full sedation with the use of CO2 instead of air, which greatly decreases uncomfortable bloating and gas afterward. A referral is not required to use the Express Endo service. To start the screening process, call 740-393-5205.
