MOUNT VERNON – Young vocalists are encouraged to register for a vocal music camp for students entering third through twelfth grade offered by Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Music Department. The event will be hosted by Elizabeth Barrett, MVNU faculty member and Community Music School instructor.
Two sessions will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 21, at the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The morning session will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m.
During the three-hour camp, students will engage musically with one another, learn vocal techniques and participate in exercises to work on expression and vulnerability through song. In addition, they will be introduced to the Knox Youth Choir.
Registration is open at https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=QRxDLX and closes on Aug. 16. There is a $20 fee.
MVNU’s Community Music School will host and direct the Knox Youth Choir, set to begin Sept. 13. The choir will consist of singers in third through eighth grade. Auditions will also be offered for an additional small ensemble consisting of high school students who will also serve as leaders and assistants for the children’s choir.
“We are thrilled to inherit the Knox Youth Choir, a wonderful program that has been in existence for students in Knox County since 1996 and was recently led by Laura Ackert and Sarah Reyes,” said Dr. John Packard, program director and chair of the MVNU Music Department.
More information on the Knox Youth Choir, including registration details, will be available during the camp and publicly released in late August.
MVNU’s Community Music School is scheduled to return this fall with more details released when plans are finalized.
