The First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon will have a rummage sale Aug. 19 and 20.

The money raised from the rummage sales, which are held twice a year, will go to local nonprofits such as Interchurch Social Services, The Winter Sanctuary, Habitat for Humanity and local Boy Scout/Girl Scout programs, church member Janet Watson told the Mount Vernon News.

“We help to fund local missions,” Watson said.

The church is located at106 N. Gay St., at the corner of Gay and Chestnut streets in Mount Vernon.

Donated items include a metal file cabinet, office supplies, a dormitory refrigerator, linens, lamps, couches, kitchen items, furniture and tools, Watson said. There will also be books, games and a good selection of clothing for all ages, she added.

The sale will be 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. Aug. 19, and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Aug. 20, Watson said.

The church was founded in 1808 in Clinton when Thomas Jefferson was president, according to its website.

“The story of this church is a reflection of the American experience, but it is much more than that,” the church said. “Our backstory shows that season after season we adapt under the hand of God, found our way through external and internal challenges with God’s help, and advanced the kingdom through God’s power.”

When Mount Vernon became the county seat, the church moved to its current location, in a “modest brick structure” at first. A larger wooden sanctuary was constructed in1841 but burned in 1858, replaced two years later.
