Main Street Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON – Main Street in July features banners labeled “Hometown Heroes” flying along the street poles.

Pictured on these banners are individuals and organizations that were honored through Main Street’s Mount Vernon Strong campaign. The banners not only helped with the culmination of the Strong campaign, but they also served as the kick off to the new banner program.

The Design Committee of Main Street Mount Vernon presented a schedule of banner themes to reflect the character of Mount Vernon and the surrounding areas, as well as promote downtown and add aesthetic to events happening in the central business district. Starting in July, the Hometown Heroes banner program shows appreciation to current residents of Knox County who have served the county, city, community or specific occupation in a manner deserving of recognition.

The Veterans Day banner program will honor current and past United States Armed Forces veterans who have or currently live in Knox County.

Christmas and Winter Wonderland banner programs will showcase the beautiful historic central business district during the winter months.

Next May, in memoriam, Main Street will honor United States Armed Forces veterans who have died in the line of duty with the Memorial Day Banner Program.

Local nonprofit organizations and businesses will still have the opportunity to rent up to 10 banner poles to fly flags to commemorate a community inclusive event, campaign or promotion, and all banner programs are subject to approval by the Main Street Mount Vernon Design Committee.
