MOUNT VERNON – The Mount Vernon Police Department promoted Jessica Butler from detective-patrolman to the rank of sergeant.

Butler has served with the Police Department since 2003 and served as a patrol officer until 2018, when she moved into the Detective Division. She has been a field training officer, a drug interdiction officer and served on the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, Mayor Matt Starr told the Mount Vernon News.

“She is returning to the road from the Detective Division onto the road as a sergeant. And we are excited about her promotion,” he said.

Mount Vernon Music & Arts Festival

The Mount Vernon Music and Arts Festival will feature Six Miles to Nellie and Phil Dirt and the Dozers when the festival returns to the city on Aug. 13-15.

Starr said planning has begun, with city officials having met with festival directors Thursday to go over logistics. Expect many changes in the layout of the festival, he said.

“We're really excited to have the festival back. It's going to be a three-day event instead of a four-day event,” Starr said.

Though the festival officially starts on Aug. 13, a special kick-off event on Aug. 12 brings the Cleveland Keys to the Woodward Opera House for “The Dueling Pianos Concert” at 7 p.m., organizers posted on the festival website (www.mvmaf.org).

Tickets on the main floor include the concert and dinner at $90 per ticket or $800 for a table of nine. Balcony seating costs $35 per person, which includes a box snack.

When Phil Dirt and the Dozers (phildirt.com) take the Public Square stage on Saturday night, Aug. 14, expect at least 3,000 people around the Public Square, Starr said. The group has been coming to the festival for years, he said. It performa the harmonies of the Beach Boys, Four Seasons, the Eagles and other classic bands.

Six Miles to Nellie takes the stage on Aug. 13. This Ohio group includes Knox County native Courtney DeCoskey. The band performs its “brand of original Americana music and a range of covers and original songs shaped by decades of the music of the people,” its website (http://www.sixmilestonellie.com/what-we-do) said.

Crying Out LOUD will perform earlier that evening on the Public Square stage, performing rock music covers from the '70s, '80s and '90s and a few original songs.

A new performing area will be the Community Crossroads Stage at the intersection of South Main and Vine Streets, the festival website said.

Utilities

Chemical testing continues at the city’s wastewater facility for phosphorous removal. That was one of the Ohio EPA mandates, Starr said.

“We did have some divers go into the west well that provides the raw water to the water facility. Inspection from divers showed no issues, which is always good news,” he said.

Public Buildings & Lands

The cemetery staff will be removing flags from the Veteran flag holders this week. Students put the flags out for Memorial Day, which were kept until after the Independence Day. Some of the flags are aging and will be replaced.

“I really want to thank Knox County Veterans Services for their help with that effort,” Starr said.
