GAMBIER – Elva “Mae” Matheny, 83, of Gambier, passed away unexpectedly at the Knox Community Hospital on June 10, 2021. She was born on Nov. 22, 1937, in Knox County to George and Mammie (Shoults) Smith.

Mae graduated from Gambier High School in 1955, where she was a cheerleader for four years. She worked various jobs throughout her young adult life after college. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and her family’s longtime love for horses and 4-H. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Mae was a member of the Grove Church of Christ.

She is survived by her children, Bob (Vickie) Matheny, Daryl (Sheryl) Matheny and Mindy Rose; grandchildren, Lindsey, Jeff and Tika; brothers, Paul (Alice) Smith, Dale (Jenny) Smith and Gail Smith; and many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bill Smith; and son-in-law, Joe Rose.

Calling hours will be held from 4–6 p.m on Thursday, June 17, at the Lasater Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jun 18, at Union Grove Cemetery.
