MOUNT VERNON – The North Main and Chestnut Street intersection reopened on May 19 after passing safety checks and traffic signal tests, though a few tasks remain on the project, Mayor Matt Starr said.
Lights must be installed on top of the posts, which are called luminaries, he said. They are on backorder and should be shipped in approximately one month.
“We also have to hang some signs, state route signs and wayfinding signs,” Starr said.
A Wi-Fi transmitter will be installed, bringing free wireless internet up to the first block of North Main Street.
“We still have not alleviated the traffic problem altogether because Columbia Gas is working in the area,” he said. “They have some roads shut off farther west from that intersection. When they’re done, I think it’s going to restore traffic patterns back to where they were.”
Starr said he has seen trucks make right-hand turns at the intersection with no problems since it reopened.
Fire Department
In recognition of EMS Week, an Air Evac Lifeteam flew to the Mount Vernon fire station to present the Fire Department with an EMS award for providing emergency medical services in a highly commendable manner. The department made the call for critical-care air transport for a patient in need of advanced trauma care.
Street Department
Street sweeping continues this week, with crews on Gambier Street this Wednesday, and East High Street and East Chestnut Street on Thursday.
Parks
Ariel-Foundation Park announced that the triathlon/duathlon scheduled for Aug. 29 at the park has been cancelled. HFP Racing, the organization planning and executing the event, has been purchased by another company and the date conflicts with an existing event for the new company.
“After spending nearly two years discussing the possibility of hosting a multi-sport race, making careful plans and preparations for the event, we’re genuinely disappointed that we are not able to move forward with the event at this time,” park leadership said on its website.
An email was sent out by HFP Racing/Greenswell on May 18 with details about refunds. Email craigthompson@greenswell.com with questions.
Progress continues to be made on the City’s Memorial Day Memorial Service and Parade, Starr said. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. on May 31.
Hiawatha Water Park is ready for the season.
“We’ve finished much-needed repair spot checks, working with our local health department to make sure everything is in tip-top shape there,” Starr said.
The City still wants more lifeguards for the park.
“People out there who are interested in saving lives have to stop in and put in an application to the City,” he said.
